Dedicated Craftsmanship
The steps to make rhinoceros skin is beyond complicated. The first step is to have the base of ki urushi for the upcoming layers to have a solid base to brush onto. Then the master uses a special tool to paint on a colored layer that clumps to make an uneven surface on the pen barrel (thick paint normally made with urushi and bounding agent to makes the urushi thicker than normal).
Next the artist has to use fingers to nudge around the paint to shape them into little pinnacles. After the paint is dry, the pen barrel is layered with different colors of paint and sanded to evenness. As the height and the color of the paint are different, the pen starts to show unique patterns. The colored lacquer patterns and colors are then mottled and resembled the color of rhino skin, hence the name Rhinoceros Skin Lacquer.
